Towards China

Terms of use

Updated 9 October 2026. These terms explain how to use Towards China, its articles and its optional reader accounts. Towards China is a free, British student-led cultural magazine. Adult publisher Donato Bilancia manages the website and reader data. Contact info@towardschina.co.uk for help.

Come and be curious

You can read the magazine without an account. Our intended audience includes young people aged around 13–17, and we use protective privacy defaults for all readers. You do not need to tell us your school, home address, date of birth or location. If anything about an account or message worries you, ask a trusted adult for help.

Your reader account

An account lets you save articles you choose to mark and find them again on another device. Opening an article does not mark it as read. Your account shelf is private to your account, although authorised administrators can access stored records for support and administration. A guest shelf stays in that browser and is not automatically copied into an account.

Choose a username that does not identify your school or reveal private details. Keep your password and sign-in links to yourself, and sign out on shared devices. Google sign-in is optional. We never need your Google password or ask you to email us any password.

Creating an account does not subscribe you to the newsletter. You can unmark articles or clear your shelf, and contact the adult publisher to request account deletion or help with your information. The Privacy Policy explains what we collect, our purposes, retention and your rights.

Using the site fairly

Please do not impersonate someone, use another person’s account, harass anyone, submit unlawful material, send spam, attempt to bypass access controls or disrupt the website. Security checks and rate limits help protect the service. They do not give anyone permission to inspect another reader’s private information.

We may temporarily restrict an account to address a specific security problem or misuse. Where it is safe and practical, we will explain the reason and give you a chance to respond. You can contact us if you think a restriction is mistaken. We will review it and correct mistakes; we may act immediately where needed to protect readers or the service.

Sharing stories and contacting us

You are welcome to share links to our articles. Our text and illustrations, and any material we use under a licence, remain subject to the relevant copyright and licence conditions. You can use material where the law or its licence permits; contact us for other reuse. A source link is not permission to copy that source’s photographs or other work.

The magazine currently has no public reader comments or direct messages. Correspondence is handled through the publication email. Please leave out your school, home address, live location and other unnecessary private information. Sending a message does not give us permission to publish your name, photograph or message. We will seek any permission needed for publication.

What our articles can tell you

Our stories explore language, culture, places and history through sources. They are general editorial information, rather than individual medical, legal, financial or travel advice. Rules, services and opening arrangements can change, so check the responsible official source before making practical plans. Editorial illustrations are visual interpretations, not documentary photographs.

We aim to explain things accurately and correct mistakes. Our Editorial Policy and Corrections Policy explain how to raise a concern. Linked websites have their own terms and privacy practices.

Availability and changes

Maintenance or a fault may temporarily interrupt the site or an account feature. We will try to restore access and protect saved information. If we change these terms or a reader feature materially, we will explain the change in an appropriate place. A change to terms does not replace any separate consent needed for a new use of personal data.

Nothing here removes rights you have under applicable law or excludes responsibility that cannot lawfully be excluded. These terms do not require you to waive a complaint, accept a private arbitration process or bring a claim only in a court chosen by us.
